Words Their Way Spelling

Your child received a list of spelling words today! Your child cut out the words, sorted them, and wrote down the sort. There should be a golden envelop in your child's binder where the words are stored. Along with the envelop, your child received a hand-out explaining different games to play with the words. Each night, your child should do one of the activities from the hand out. If you find one of the games especially helpful, then play that game again.

Here is a list of games from the hand-out:

Speed Sort: Your child will put the pattern cards (bold print) across the top of a table, and then quickly sort the words by their pattern.

Blind Sort: Lay down a word from each category as a header (bold words). Then have someone else call out the words while you write them in the correct category. You must tell/ write where the word goes without seeing it.

Word Hunt: Look for words in the book you are currently reading. Try to find 2 or 3 words from each category.

Creative Cat: Use your words to create a poem, play, narrative, or comic strip.

New Pattern Sort: Create new sorts and label each of your sorts with new patterns.

Puzzles: Create puzzles and codes with keys using words from your list. You can also put them on quizlet.

Definitions: Select six words and write all definitions.

Base Word: Write words that have base words and underline the base words.

The test each week will have 20 of the words from the student list, but there will also be an additional five words that are not on the list that follow the same patterns. This way I can see if your child has mastered the spelling patterns.
